
Stocks were trading with small gains after the opening bell Thursday in the final session of a holiday-shortened week, as investors weighed a raft of earnings from big Wall Street banks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.33% rose 181 points, or 0.5%, while the S&P 500 SPX, -1.21% was up 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -2.14% rose fractionally. Big bank shares were mostly higher after reporting earnings ahead of the bell. Goldman Sachs GS, -0.10% shares rose 3.2%, while Citigroup C, +1.56% shares gained 1.7%, and Morgan Stanley MS, +0.75% shares advanced 3.3%. Wells Fargo & Co. WFC, -4.51% shares slumped 5.7%. Twitter Inc. TWTR, -1.68% shares were also in focus, up 4.1%, after Tesla Inc. TSLA, -3.66% chief Elon Musk offered to buy all outstanding shares at $54.20 a share.
