Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has defeated Democratic challenger Mandela Barnes in their closely watched race, according to an Associated Press projection. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report had viewed the contest in the Badger State as “Lean R,” making it one of nine competitive Senate battles that would help determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. Democrats have performed better than expected in the 2022 midterm elections and could keep their grip on the Senate, but they are anticipated to lose the House.
